Salzburg is the ultimate musical city. During your stay, you can trace the steps of its most famous native, Mozart. His birthplace is filled with touching reminders of his early years. The splendid Residence of the Prince Archbishops, with its magnificent Council Chamber, hosted his first concerts, and he was baptized in St. Peter’s Basilica. Mozart’s presence can surprise you in unexpected places, such as on the way to Capuchin Hill, where a statue of the musician overlooks the city from a sublime vantage point.
At the end of January, Salzburg celebrates Mozart Week in honor of Wolfgang Amadeus, born on January 27. This year’s event, conducted by tenor Rolando Villazón, features performances by four of history’s greatest composers: Mozart, Monteverdi, Bach, and Handel. Over five days, enjoy concerts by renowned artists such as singers Sonya Yoncheva and Juan Diego Flórez, pianists Mitsuko Uchida and András Schiff, and a remarkable rendition of Monteverdi’s Orfeo conducted by Christina Pluhar.
